Your map from Kerchner is wrong. If you look at the original which is now available on the internet. In the centre of it the gun positions were mared very clearly as “gun positions dismantled” – someone has conveniently changed this map so that is not mentioned.
Also the map in question was given to the Rangers on the day of the 21st of April – the day before the bombing which destroyed another of the gun pits.
There could only have been 3 gun pits operational at Pointe du Hoc on D-day…. so I hope that your game reflects that. Additionally – the gun batteries (3 of them) engaged the US Navy for 3 days and fired until the site was captured by the 5th and 2nd Rangers on the 9th of June.
Maisy was the operational gun battery covering that part of the coast. Pointe du Hoc was not operational.
Thanks Gary for the input. I used the Kerchner map to provide a general view of the possible German defenses around Ponte du Hoc before the actual invasion. Seen some PdH scenarios played with just field trenches and some “bunker like” objectives. Since the “missing guns” play an indirect part in this scenario, the inland scenario objectives give reason for scouting Ranger patrols to find the cannon later, if the Rangers control one or both at scenario end.
The Maisy battery, west of PdH, was engaging the Allied shipping after the June 6th invasion. Seen your web site on Maisy battery. Thanks for your comments and supporting the Maisy Battery historical site.
